Before the player arrives, each Grumpus is in a state of turmoil, battling with their own exaggerated character flaws. Similar to how a cult leader selects its members, Lizbert selected broken and helpless individuals to come to Snacktooth Island, and the player can help piece them back together. If a player takes the time to complete Bugsnax's various side quests, they will get to know each Grumpus on a personal level. This would not only drive home the fact that Bugsnax are as dangerous as Lizbert claims, but the player would realize they were ultimately the reason a particular Grumpus died. It would have been a more impactful ending if Grumpuses that were fully transformed due to consuming Bugsnax died by default. The saddest ending in the game results from losing every Grumpus to the Bugsnax, but it's actually rather difficult to obtain. If a Grumpus is fully transformed by the end of their portion of the Escape From Snaktooth Island, they will die, prompting a comment from the other Grumpus in the area. If the player fails to stop the Bugsnax from reaching their friends, the Grumpuses will eat them and further transform.
